10 Things that Successful Sales People Do That Failures Won’t

“The secret of success lies in forming the habit of doing things that failures don’t like to do.”     Albert E. N. Gray

Today I want to share some great words of wisdom on sales that form the base of my business and also will lead you into what our new sales group is doing.

Each of these is meant to help you strengthen your sales process.

1/      Make the calls you are suppose to make today.

No matter what else is going on.

            There are no excuses.

Subscribe to that and you will be amazed at what happens.

2/      Do what you said you where going to do when you said you were going to do it.

In other words, schedule everything, and then execute your schedule.

Plan out tomorrow in detail, what you are going to do and when you are going to do it.  Then execute your plan and don’t let other people drive your day.

3/      Stay focused on the sales

As a sales person your job in to close business.

There are so many distractions all around you.

            Ignore them.

Your job is to bring in business; everything else around you is secondary.  Successful sales people sell, and they sell big.  It really is that simple.

4/      Have a Positive Attitude and Take Positive Action

Successful people never let you know they are not on top of the situation.  They smile, they laugh they make your feel good.  They make you feel like everything is great.

That is the attitude that closes business.

But don’t just have the attitude; instead turn the attitude into action.

It is one thing to have the attitude; it is another to do it in everything you do.

5/      If your company won’t buy it for you, buy it yourself.

            You are a sales person.

            You make money selling.

If you have a problem because you lack a certain tool, go buy it.

            You get paid a commission.

            You have unlimited earning potential.

If you really need it, it should be a no brainer.

6/      Prospect Everyday

            EVERYDAY!

It doesn’t matter what else you have to do.

Set aside 1 hour or more everyday and prospect.

            Period.

If you fill the funnel, then overflow it, then make it run all over the place.

7/      Practice every day

            Know the script.

            Know the product.

Know it inside, outside and around.

            Practice, practice, practice.

            Then do it again.

8/      Know the questions your prospect is going to ask.

            Research.

            Understand.

Know what they are going to ask.

Give them the answer in easy terms they understand.

They should never ask a question you don’t have the answer to.

They should never get an answer they don’t understand.

9/      Get to “Yes” or get to “No”

It is easier to hang out in the middle.

If the customer doesn’t say no, then they are still a prospect.

            Wrong.

            Go through you list.

Ask yourself, and then ask them.

Get to yes or get to no.

            Then get on with it.

10/    Your Day is not finished until the work is done.

Sales people have unlimited income potential.

That also means they have to work until the work is done.

            This is not 9-5.

Successful sales people are always working.

They might be working in the islands in the South Caribbean but they are working.

Don’t stop till you are done.

The reward for great sales is unlimited.

            Stay and finish.

“Extraordinary results are directly determined by how narrow you can make your focus.”

From the book:  “The One Thing” by Gary Keller

Are you a multi-tasker and proud of it?

Are you the guy/girl chasing two rabbits at the same time and wondering why you are not catching either one?

Are you looking at your market as 1 inch thick and 100 miles wide – instead of focused on 1 inch wide and 100 miles deep?

In other words are you trying to do so much that all you end up doing is  “average?”  You know that nasty word that makes you like everyone else in your business?

Is your company “average?”

Doing OK!

Just strolling along?

Is that really where you want to be?  Or do you want to be a superstar?

If you want to play with the big boys and girls, then -

Stop.

Get focused.

Focus what you are doing.

And be amazed at what can happen to you and your organization.

Order your copy today and start generating more business!

Order your copy today and start generating more business!

Today I want to share with you three keys to help you narrow your marketing focus.  Three things which will help you grow your business.

No, these are not all there is, but if you do these three, you will be amazed at the results – so give it a try.

1/       Select one industry/vertical market.

Pick a single vertical to start with.

Preferably a market that you know.

One that you are already good at and working in.

Or one you have great passion for and are ready to put all into.

Then go out and put all of your time, energy and resources into that market. Become the expert in one thing!

Yes, you can still do work for everyone.

But unless you are Pepsi or Microsoft, you cannot afford to marketing to all of them.

2/        Geography

Pick a physical targeted area to sell into.

            Yes, I am a national speaker/coach.

But I market in the Northeast.

Because I am not “Apple” and I cannot afford to market everywhere.

I can still do work for people from anywhere who call me but I do not market to them.

Remember, you are not some major organization with unlimited funds.

Your target might be just a 5-mile radius from where you are located.

Or a city, a county, a state or even multiple states.

Whatever area, get to know it and work it as your area.

3/        Size of the prospect – either dollars or number of employees

Again, everyone cannot be your market.

If you are a B to B company.

Then define your market by company size or number of employees.

In almost all business, marketing to different size organizations takes different practices.

If you are in B to C market:

Then income level might be your method to find and define your audience.  Again, it makes a difference.

When you single focus, you will be astonished by what will happen to your sales and marketing process and at how much more effective it will become.

We always hear people talking about, “the problem” instead of spending their time, energy and focus trying to find the solution.

Today, I want to help you to move from a problem focused environment to a solution focused environment.

This simple little process, which I call the key to the solution, will help you get to that environment.  The process simply moves you from the problem to figuring out the solution.  I know it sounds so simple, yet so often people get stuck in the problem and never move forward.  Hesitation is the arch nemesis of success.

Step 1:

Define the problem – Use 30 words or less. No need to be too detailed. State what the problem is and then leave it for now.

Step 2:

Define Solutions – Based on the problem, move your focus to the solution.  Brainstorm, or if you are alone, mindstorm the problem.  Don’t judge, simple come up with solutions.  For the simple problems, 3-5 potential solutions will usually cover it.

For everything else, I suggest defining 20 solutions that could help you solve the problem.  Don’t stop short.

Step 3:

Select a solution – Go through the 20, cross out all those that do not really work.  Combine all you can.  Keep eliminating and combining until only one solution remains.

Step 4:

Develop the solution – Write out, in as much detail as you need, the plan and how you will make it happen.  Including a time table, help needed, costs and all other important details.

Step 5:

Implement the solution – Do it.  Don’t think about it, don’t keep going around in circles about why you can’t.  You should have done all that while thinking in the selection process.  Now, simply implement and go for the gold.

So, your first question is likely, “Manny, is it really that easy?”

Yes, in fact, if you can make a decision, it is even easier.

Can anyone do it?

Yes.

What is the key?

Now you’ve hit the most critical piece.  You see, in each step and in the process as a whole, you must know how to make a decision.  I know that sounds simple, but so many of us struggle to pull the trigger.

If you cannot make a decision, you will continue thinking about what to do, while your competition has already done it.

As one of my great mentors taught me many years ago, “make a decision will you please, if you make a wrong decision, then you can simply make another one to correct it.  At least you are moving.  If you don’t make a decision, you will continue to stand still.”

Every day, problems come and go for all of us.  Those that are successful understand this and take action.  The rest get passed by.

Sometimes this can be done is a few moments.

Sometimes it takes much longer.

But the process is the process.

So, this week I want you to try these steps and see how they work for you.  Remember through, if you cannot make a decision, they will not work.  So commit to that first.

Per T.D. Jakes, “The difference between the masterful and the mediocre is often a focused effort.”

Are you trying to do everything, for everyone, every time?

When asked, “what do you do,” will I remember – or will you confuse me so that I don’t remember?

When we talk with a focused person, we see passion; they know what they do and they know how to communicate it.  They have passion.  When we are done with our conversation, we also know what they do and we remember what they do.

The other day I had two conversations.

One with a great guy who I would really like to work with.  However, I am still not sure what he does.  I know he does many things, but what and how does it relate to me?  We talked for about an hour.

The second conversation I had lasted less than 10 minutes.  Totally focused, and I think I want to work with them, because I know what they do and I can also relate it to what I do.  They do one thing and they do it amazingly well.

Strange thing; I think the first guy also did it!

Too many times we think if we don’t do it all, we will lose the business.  But the truth be told, the opposite is true.  Focus on one thing and you will get so much more business.

So what do you have to do to get that focused and use it to build your business?

Let’s explore three things today.

1/        Find the “one thing,” you do.

If you are in construction, what do you do?  Not, “oh I do everything,” but instead:

A/        I am the best painter in the business.

B/        I create kitchens like no one else can.

C/        I am the best floor and tile guy you can hire.

            If in consulting:

A/        I help people implement CRM systems.

B/        I help people lead better.

            C/        I teach teamwork.

            Are you following me here?

This doesn’t mean you don’t do other things that your customers might need, but the truth is that by focusing, you usually have more work than you can handle.  Which means you start to grow.  WOW!

2/        Market the “thing” you do best; better than anyone else can.

I know many of us think that if we become the best  – all the work will come to us.  How is that working out?

As one of my mentors and teachers, James Malinchak, (http://bigmoneyspeaker.com) has taught us, “no one will out market me.”  When you become the best at marketing what you do, you will be amazed.

So set your time, effort and dollars on marketing.  Become the one everyone immediately thinks of in your niche.  Yes, as a small business owner you can become, “the one.”

This is why you need that niche.

3/        Over deliver.

            You found your niche.

            You got others to buy.

Now you have to over deliver the results.

Most people can do the job – however, “you” do so much more.

And you have to do it consistently – every time, all the time.

Do these three things and you will be amazed at what will happen to you and to your business.

Find your niche and go for it.

Where is your focus?

Is it on the problem or the outcome? On what you can do, or what you can’t do?

On the bad economy or on how you can create great success because
of the economic situation?

Our children are actually the best people to help us. Have you ever seen how they look at things so much differently than we do? Take a few minutes and listen to their unique reactions.

What happens when they knock the ball through the kitchen window. Is
it the end of the world? What do they focus on? The child runs in and says,
“Well dad, this is going to be great, I am going to learn how to fix a
window. Let’s get the tools and you can show me how to do it.”

When the lawnmower will not start and you have to wait until tomorrow to
get the part to fix it. Your daughter comes over and says, “well mom, I’ll get
the gloves, it looks like we will have time to play catch after all. Isn’t this
great.”

When it is raining on Saturday morning and you all had planned on going for
a picnic at the park. In comes your son with the blanket. “Ok, let’s set
everything up in the living room and we can have our picnic right here instead.
This is going to be great! We get a picnic and TV at the same time.
I love it.”

You simply cannot argue with children. They have the focus. They find the
solution. They do not dwell on the problem, they simply move on. What if
we could do that too? Would life be much better?  Would we create greater results?

Why not try it today?  Change your focus and see what happens.

So where is your focus when you encounter a problem?
You see in all the above situations, the child simply found a solution.
He/she found a way to learn, a way to play, and a way to make it happen
despite the visible circumstances. What if you apply that process to your life and you start to focus on the solution and not the problem.

WHAT IF?

But we adults don’t think that way, do we?
If we broke the window all we would think about is, “now I am going to
have to fix this.”

Apply the same situation to your job. “The customer just called and she
is very mad. I entered a bunch of data into the software and now it seems
to have been deleted. Just what I wanted to deal with.”

WHAT IF?
What if you turn that around a bit using the above child theory. “Well this is a
problem, but now Jerry, who is our support superstar, is going to help me find the
fix and I am going to be even better at what I do. It is a great day because
I am going to learn something new.”

If we could not get the part for the lawnmower, we would be mad and it
would ruin our day?

Just like in our business, when the prospect says not until tomorrow, we
focus on all the reasons we are not going to get the business. Why they
are not going to call back. Why they might just cancel it all at the last minute.

WHAT IF?
What if instead we started to think positive. Think that the customer
might actually be looking at buying more or upgrading. Or buying new
instead of taking the temporary fix.

And finally, if it was raining on Saturday morning, I can already hear you
all saying, “look at this, it is raining, all week I planned this picnic and now we
can’t have it.”  You are focused on something you can do nothing about.  Instead, focus on what you can do something about.

When the customer orders and only takes ½ of what you had hoped for, your intitial reaction would be, “this really sucks.”

WHAT IF:
What if you now took it as a challenge. How are you going to sell them
the other ½ and maybe even some more? What if you stepped up and used this
to get even better at what you do? Do you think it might just make a
difference?

In order to move forward, we have to change our focus to the things we can control and forget the rest.

Here is a great quote from Og Mandino in his book, The Greatest Salesman
in the World, “Tomorrow lies buried with yesterday and I will think of it no
more. Concentrate 100% on what you have to deal with today.”

And deal with it very well.

Today, take the same child like look at the situation, laugh a bit and then see
a much better, clearer answer.

Focus on what you can do to fix the issue. Focus on what you can do to make it
better. Focus on the positive.

Are you excited about where you are going?  Are you on the path that will
take you to your life’s dream?  Are you still hesitating?  Are you doing great,
but know that you want to do even better?

What are you doing about it?

Coaching can lead you to that result.  It really works.  It can be that edge
that you need.  Connect with me and let’s see what we can do to help you.

Keys to getting your life back under control.

Are you frustrated?
Are you tired of spending 10, 12, 14 even 18 hours a day working?
Are you tired of not accomplishing the things you want?
Are you just plain tired?

Then guess what?
It is time you learned the following 3 simple techniques that will change your life and give you back the control you need.

Because if you can learn just these three simple things your life will change dramatically

1/ Get control of your schedule
You need to control your schedule, period.
Once you do this, you will get so much more done.

You need to learn to say no.
You need to say these are the days I am in the office and there are days I am on the road.

Stop scheduling stuff when you are not available.

This is when I can meet with you or anyone else, period.
You need to see someone else on that, they are better at it.

When my door is shut, leave me alone.
That is why I have a team – stop coming to me.

You need to say this is the way we are going to operate.
Once you say that, you will be amazed.

Will there be exceptions, there always are.
But they are the exception, not the rule.
You need to take control of your schedule and you need to control your day.
You will be amazed at how much more you get done.

2/ Do what you do best and give the rest to someone else.
I don’t care if you think you can’t do it.
If you think you can’t afford to do it.
If there just is no one else who can do it.
The bottom line is you are good at – selling – operations – administration – billable work.
Whatever it is, and the rest is wasting your time and talents and money.

Most people spend 80% of their time doing what results in 20% of the solution. Just imagine what happens when you spend 80% of your time doing what you do best – WOW!

Start today and get rid of everything you do that someone else can do better.
Then spend 80% of your time doing what you do great.

3/ Infect everyone with a passion that you exhibit day in and day out
Do you get that?
If you exhibit passion in everything you do all day long – because you are doing what you are great at – you will infect the organization.
If you are pumped up and rolling, the rest of the team will be pumped up and rolling.

Do you think people can work in my organizations and not get infected with this passion?
Watch the video and tell me that? http://youtu.be/ev1zj2zih3Q

Are you pumped up?
Do you realize that your people operate just like YOU?
If you are overworked, miserable, cranky, frustrated.
Then your team will be the same.
Yes, even weak workers can turn into super stars – when you add passion to the mix.

Three keys:
First, control your schedule, do it your way.
Second, do what you do best and delegate the rest – find a way to do it.
Third, get that passion out there and infect everyone.

The passion happens once you take control.
Do you think if that if you controlled your schedule and you did only what you do best you would have some passion? Of course, you would.

Now get out there and do it.
Yes you can.

Successful Sales People Are Different

Posted by Manny on June 6, 2014
Posted in Selling  | Tagged With: , , , ,

Do you want to be successful and sell more than anyone else, or do you want to fit in with the crowd?

One thing I have learned in my work with entrepreneurs over the last 10 years is that few if any of them ever followed the crowd.

Fewer were conforming.

Even fewer we worried about what other people thought.

They were simply focused on success.

What about you?

Today I want to look at 3 simple points related to success in sales.

1/       To be successful you have to be different.

 0010

Per John Huntsman: “ Failure often is the result of following the crowd.”

How are you prospecting – like everyone else or are you doing something different?

Are you just sitting around sending out emails like everyone else, or perhaps you have picked up the phone or gotten in your car and started knocking on doors.

Are you thinking email is so easy, why do anything else?

How many mailers have you gotten recently?  Perhaps you should try something different.

Not getting the business you think you could?

What are you doing about it?

Get started today.

Start thinking about what you can do that others are not, then do it.

To be successful you have to be different.

2/       To be successful you have to take a risk.

0020

Per William Shedd: “A ship in harbor is safe but that is not what ships are built for.”

Are you doing what is safe, what is easy?

Or are you taking that risk

A sales person not excelling or not going for the gold or not making it happen is like that ship in the harbor.

If you really believe you were made to sell, then you need to get out there and do it.  You are on the team to be a star, get out there and be the star.

Start reading stuff from people who have done it and are doing it.

Start listening to stuff from successful people.

Make a commitment to be the best, not just one of many.

Do something different.

Make calls early, make call late, make calls during lunch.

Wow, maybe just make calls?

To be successful you have to take a risk.

3/       Today is the day to start making it happen.

Per Dr. David Jeremiah: “Remember today is the day you thought about yesterday when you said: ‘I can do that tomorrow’.”

Well it is tomorrow and are you doing it?

As I always say, action creates success.

If you can do something, do it.

Don’t think about it.

Don’t procrastinate.

Do it.

Today is the day you make the commitment, but more.  Today is the day you start doing something different.  Today is the day you take that chance.

So, get out there and make it happen.

There you have it.

Successful Sales People Are different.

Are you going to be successful or just another sales person.

Get out there and do it.

“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t–you’re right.”
― Henry Ford

So how are you doing with this?

Are you really taking your business to the level you want?

Or, are you holding back?

Are you doing great, but you known deep inside that you could do so much more?

Are you going backward? Doing things the way you always have and wondering why things are not taking off?

I wanted to share a great story with you this morning that I hope will help you in moving forward faster and stronger. Now I am no Bible scholar, but this story is a great story of believing you can.

Many years ago a might leader, you might have heard of him, Moses? He had a tough mission before him. He had a hard group of people to deal with. A group who kept seeing miracle after miracle happen, but then forgetting what happened and falling backward into unbelief.

Moses was on a mission. The mission was to take the people into a new land. He had brought the people a long way (God had). They had overcome so much on their journey, that by now, they should have had a great belief. But instead, they were weak and their belief sucked.

Just take a moment and think of how much you have overcome to get where you are today – don’t stop now. Believe you can.

Moses sent out a team of 10 men on a mission to spy out the promise land. These 10 men went out and they saw this beautiful land flowing with milk and honey. It was a beautiful place. All that God had promised them so long ago.

But, (isn’t there always a but) there were giants in the land and this created fear in the men. Even through they knew God could defeat the giants, they feared them.

Kind of like when you know you can break through this roadblock. You know you have done it before. You know you can take your business to the next level, yet you don’t.

How long are you going to sit there and let the giants hold you back?

So the men said among themselves, “we cannot take this land, the giants are to strong, we have to report that the land is not what we though. We have to think of the people.” So that is what they did. They reported back that it was not a great land and they should not move forward.

Does this sound in anyway familiar to any of you? I believe many of us have been there and done this. We know exactly what the combination to the safe is, yet we do not turn the dial, we do not open the door, we let fear hold us back. We let fear keep us from being all we could be and doing all we could do.

Today I want you to take another look.
You see, there where two men among the 10 who had no fear, who wanted to move forward, but they where held back by the rest.
What is holding you back?

Today I want you to start believing and start moving forward.
I read a great little quote this morning that fits here very well.

“Vision without action is daydreaming.
Action without vision is a nightmare.
Vision with action is beautiful reality.”

Today, start down the road to remove those roadblocks and to make it happen for you.

Stop holding back and start going for the gold.
YES YOU CAN!

Who controls your time?

He who controls his time, control his success.

She who controls her time, controls her life.

It is a plain and simple fact.

Time is Ticking away? What are you doing right now that is productive?

Time is Ticking away? What are you doing right now that is productive?

If you are allowing others to control your time, you are not accomplishing anywhere near what you could.

Today you need to make a commitment to value your time.

Today start to believe time is the most valuable resource you have.

Today start living like time is your most valuable resource.

Let’s look at a few keys that can help you.

1/ Stop letting the trivial bombard you.

Is what you are doing right now the most important thing you can be doing?

If not, stop and change to something more important.

We don’t get to the important because we are stuck in the unimportant.

Today, make the commitment – I am going to start doing the most important.

Point: Get your priorities in line with your life.

2/ Get started – NOW!

“The greatest time wasted is the time getting started.”  Dawson Trotman

Stop thinking about it and just get started doing it.

An interesting test for your to try.  When you start doing something, write down how long you thought about doing it.  At the end of the week, total the number.  You might just be amazed.

Procrastination can stop an elephant dead in its tracks.

Make a commitment today to start doing.

This is a tool that can help you with procrastination.

I have used it myself, it is amazing.  I thought I never procrastinated and I was getting so much done.  Surprise.  Ten minutes twice a day for two weeks, and now I am really fast and moving so much further.

Point: Stop thinking about it and get moving.

3/ Get organized

Did you know that according to Guerrilla Selling, the average business person spends over 3 hours each week looking for misplaced information?

Three hours – what could you do in that amount of time

You could change the world.

Let’s be honest, we all fall into this.  How many times have you spent 15 minutes looking for a file on your computer, or in your office.

Organization does amazing things.

Point: Either get yourself organized or get someone to do it for you.

So, let’s take just a moment and think about this.

I focus on the right things, I spend less and less time thinking about it and more and more time moving quicker, and I get organized.

WOW!

Do you think perhaps success will come a whole bunch closer?

However, the key that so many of us miss
is that to be really successful you have to
have all three working in your life.

In professional baseball, 1 our of 3 will
make you an all-star. A batting average
of .333 will make you one of the best.

As an NFL quarterback, if you complete 2/3
of your passes, you will be on the top of the
all time career completion leaders.

But in life, the greatest success comes to
those who complete all three.

Wondering if that is true?
Take a moment and think about it.
Think about the real successful people.
You will quickly learn that they have all three.
Think about those who look successful,
but where missing a piece.

Many have 2 out of 3, and might look
successful, but 2 out of 3, that is just
not enough.

At our upcoming boot camp -

make a profit, how will you ever save
and invest?

3/ Make sure you use your time
effectively. Are you taking time for you, for
your health, for your family? Focused on
